How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle panels by height and width, band tightly with edge protectors, and place on a sturdy skid (e.g., 48×96 for 8 ft forms) to meet the bundles/skids requirement.
- List panel count, bundle count, and any pins/wedges shipped separately on the BOL; keep small hardware in a boxed, banded container on the same skid.
- Use 3 or more dunnage runners to create forklift clearance and keep fork entries available from two sides to reduce handling risk and speed loading.
- Protect exposed corners and faces with corrugated pads or wood caps to prevent aluminum abrasion; stretch-wrap to control loose ties or strongbacks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Item-specific NMFC simplifies quoting—no density calculation needed—reducing reclass disputes and accelerating LTL rate approvals.
- Packaging as bundles or skids helps qualify for the lower end of the 70–92.5 class range, cutting per-hundredweight costs.
- Standard skid footprints improve carrier acceptance, minimize handling charges, and lower damage claim risk for high-value form sets.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees, improving lane coverage for contractors and rental yards.
