How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Bundle flat follow boards and moulding plates on a full-deck skid; add slip sheets between faces and use edge protectors before steel strapping.
  2. Block and brace heavy copes/nowels so they cannot roll or slide; keep the center of gravity low and allow forklift entry from two sides.
  3. Protect machined or sealed faces with foam or corrugated pads; for iron or steel pieces, apply rust inhibitor and wrap to limit moisture.
  4. Group complete sets (cope, nowel, plates) on one pallet and label each piece; include a packing list with piece counts and clear part names.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass risk, speeding up LTL rate shopping.
  • No density calculation needed, cutting time spent on NMFC lookups and paperwork.
  • Proper crating/bundling lowers damage and OS&D claims, protecting production schedules.
  • Consolidating parts into set-based pallets trims handling, minimizes accessorials, and can improve freight rates.
