How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- For heavy iron flasks, use a 4‑way pallet rated above gross weight; block under frame edges to prevent racking during LTL handling.
- Protect alignment pins, lugs, and clamp hardware with foam and a plywood face; shrink-wrap to keep loose parts from shifting.
- If shipping cope and drag as a matched set, band them together and mark the BOL “combined” to avoid mis-picks and separations.
- List NMFC 76240, Class 70 on the BOL; note “iron” or “wood” and whether shipped separate or combined for clear receiving.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 removes density guesswork, speeding quotes and preventing costly reclass fees.
- Single NMFC 76240 for iron or wood simplifies tariffs and contract lane setup across vendors.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and shortens tender times in LTL networks.
- Shipping matched or nested sets reduces cube and touches, improving rate per pound and lowering damage claims.
