How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book at Class 400 and list the exact NMFC: “Frames, lamp shade, expanded metal, in boxes (NMFC 76530)” on the BOL to prevent density reclass.
- Pack each frame in a rigid double‑wall carton (275# test or better). Wrap the mesh lattice to stop abrasion, add edge/corner protectors, and seal all seams.
- Avoid loose fill that snags in the expanded metal. Use kraft, foam, or honeycomb pads as void fill and place partitions if multiple frames share a box.
- For multi-carton moves, palletize with no overhang, add a top cap, and strap around cartons (not the product). Mark This Side Up and Do Not Crush.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 400 enables instant quotes and consistent LTL rate benchmarking.
- Fewer billing headaches: boxed packaging and the correct NMFC on documents help avoid reclass and inspection fees.
- Lower damage exposure: protected lattice edges and rigid cartons reduce claims, reships, and service failures.
- Cost levers: nest frames to shrink carton size, consolidate cartons on one pallet to dodge multiple minimum charges, and leverage carriers with strong high-class discounts.
