How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density: measure exterior length, width, and height of each box or crate, convert to cubic feet, divide by actual weight, then pick the class within 50–400. Higher PCF means lower class.
- Protect glass: use corner guards, foam or honeycomb pads, and a floating pack so the frame never contacts the outer wall. Crate oversize mirrors and band the crate to a pallet.
- Document precisely on the BOL: “Frames, mirror or picture, NOI,” include packaging type (boxes or crates), piece count, and density (e.g., 200 lb, 18 PCF). Add liftgate or residential where applicable.
- Label handling clearly: FRAGILE/GLASS, up arrows, and Do Not Stack cones when needed. Keep cartons inside pallet footprint to avoid overhang and puncture.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Optimized rates from accurate density: snug packing or nesting smaller frames raises PCF and can move shipments into lower-cost classes.
- Lower claims via purpose-built protection: floating packs, blocking, and wood crating reduce breakage, chargebacks, and reship expenses.
- Fewer inspections and reclass fees: clear BOL wording and Item 170–compliant packaging cut dispute risk and surprise costs.
- Predictable transit and better hub handling: palletized, well-labeled glass moves faster through LTL networks and avoids extra manual touches.
