How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the commodity as frit (glazing compound) and reference Note, item 76722 on paperwork; list NMFC 76720, Class 55, non-hazardous, and the exact packaging (e.g., 30 boxes).
- Use sift-proof packaging to contain fine particles: line corrugated boxes with poly, seal inner bags, or choose tight-head drums. Add desiccant or top sheets to limit moisture pickup.
- Palletize uniformly: 4-way pallets, stretch wrap to the deck, and apply corner boards. For bagged or light-wall boxes, cap with a slip sheet and mark Do Not Double Stack if crush risk exists.
- Keep frit separate from food items and ingredients. Request dry vans, avoid water exposure during loading, and note any handling cautions (dust-sensitive, fragile packaging) on the BOL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: Fixed Class 55 eliminates density disputes and reduces reclass exposure on LTL lanes.
- Lower overhead: Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and streamlines carrier acceptance and transit planning.
- Fewer claims: Recognized packaging (boxes, bags, or drums) and clear labeling minimize leakage and contamination risks.
- Reliable budgeting: Consistent classing supports stable quotes for ceramic, enamel, and glass manufacturers replenishing frit inventory.
