How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Describe the commodity as “umbrella frames without covers or handles” on the BOL to align precisely with NMFC 76695.
- Pack frames in rigid boxes with dividers or partitions so rods and ribs can’t pierce the carton; add end caps and band light bundles to prevent shifting.
- Keep lengths straight: use long cartons with corner reinforcements and “Do Not Bend” arrows, or nest folded frames to shorten packages and reduce overlength fees.
- Book at Class 70 with no density needed; list piece count and box dimensions, and avoid mixing canopies or handles in the same carton to prevent reclass.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing with a fixed Class 70 reduces reweigh and reclass penalties.
- Boxed packaging stacks cleanly and limits damage to delicate ribs and stretchers, lowering claim risk.
- Nonhazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, especially for distributor replenishment.
- Single NMFC listing streamlines audits and compliance, improving quote accuracy and routing-guide adherence.
