How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density for each handling unit: total weight ÷ cubic feet. Example: 20 lb in 2.5 cu ft = 8 pcf. Record the pcf on the BOL for NMFC 76860.
- Choose packaging that blocks moisture and sifting. Use lined corrugated boxes, tight inner bags, or sealed drums; confirm Package 2257 specs when applicable.
- Describe precisely on paperwork: “Freeze-dried foods, NOI, NMFC 76860, density __ pcf, in boxes/drums.” Reference the note item 76861 and note subject to Item 170.
- Stabilize lightweight, bulky freight to avoid reclass and damage: fill voids, strap to pallets, apply ‘This Side Up’ where product can powder or crumble.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate density entry locks in the correct class, reducing surprise reclass fees and invoice disputes for light but high-cube loads.
- Right-size cartons and compress voids to raise pcf, which can drive a lower LTL rate within the 50–400 class spectrum.
- Moisture- and sift-resistant packing cuts OS&D claims on brittle, vacuum-dried foods, protecting margins and customer service KPIs.
- Non-hazardous commodity broadens carrier options and simplifies routing, speeding quotes and pickup scheduling.
