How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Note NMFC 77580 and Class 100 on the BOL and label cartons “Do Not Freeze”; this prevents reclass fees and protects temperature-sensitive fruit.
- Pack in ventilated produce boxes or sturdy crates, aligning vent holes between layers to keep airflow consistent during transit and reduce pressure bruising.
- Palletize on 40×48 GMA pallets, column-stack cartons, avoid overhang, and cap height to prevent compression—e.g., no more than 60–72 inches depending on box strength.
- Request temperature-managed service when required; avocados typically ride cool (not freezing). Avoid weekend layovers and plan tight pickup-to-delivery windows.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 simplifies rating—no density math—speeding quotes and reducing the chance of costly reclassifications.
- Standard boxes or crates minimize handling damage and claims, preserving sellable yield and protecting margins on perishable inventory.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and streamlines carrier acceptance, improving lane options for seasonal produce flows.
- Easier consolidation on produce lanes (same temp profile) can cut LTL costs and stabilize rates during peak harvest periods.
