How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use ventilated banana boxes or sturdy produce crates, then stretch-wrap to pallets while keeping vents exposed for airflow and ripening control.
- Mark the BOL as Prepaid and list the commodity as “Bananas, in boxes/crates – NMFC 77600, Class 92.5.” Include pallet count and package quantities.
- Select cool-chain or insulated LTL options on warmer routes; target shorter transit times to minimize bruising and overripening.
- Palletize with corner boards and do not top-load. Stack only to the box crush rating and add “Keep From Freezing/Do Not Freeze” as seasonally appropriate.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 92.5 rating—no density calculations or reclass surprises.
- Clear prepaid designation reduces billing disputes and speeds tender-to-invoice cycles.
- Standard banana boxes/crates streamline dock handling and reduce accessorial risks tied to repacking.
- Lower damage and shrink through proper airflow and stacking practices, protecting margin on perishable freight.
