How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Select approved packs: ventilated produce boxes or sturdy crates with slatted or solid lids. Stretch-wrap and band to pallets, using corner boards to prevent crush on outer heads.
  2. Book reefer LTL at 32–36°F with high humidity and request Protect from Freezing during cold snaps. Avoid long cross-dock dwell to keep cores crisp.
  3. Separate from ethylene-producing freight like apples, bananas, and tomatoes, and avoid co-loading with odor-sensitive items. Do not top-load heavy cases over cabbage layers.
  4. Print NMFC 77680, Class 70 on the BOL and list packaging type and count (e.g., 45 boxes). Include total weight and note “Fresh Produce – Perishable, Appointment Required.”

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable pricing with fixed Class 70 removes density guesswork and lowers reclass risk and accessorial disputes.
  • Packaging flexibility—boxes or crates (also drums or bushel baskets)—lets growers and packers use existing lines, reducing material and labor costs.
  • Non-hazardous status speeds carrier acceptance and scheduling, improving on-time delivery for retail and foodservice programs.
  • Clear NMFC coverage for produce reduces claim exposure when paired with proper temperature control and pallet stabilization, preserving shelf life and quality.
