How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Mark the BOL as Prepaid and list the item clearly, e.g., “NMFC 77720 – Celery, Class 92.5,” to match the classification and avoid re-bills.
- Use vented produce cartons or plastic crates with liners; keep airflow paths open for reefer circulation. If icing is used, ensure leak-resistant packaging.
- Palletize on 48x40 with no overhang; align vents front-to-back, add corner boards and a top cap, and avoid stacking heavy freight on celery.
- Maintain 32–36°F and ~95% RH. Do not co-load with high-ethylene products (apples, bananas, tomatoes) to prevent bitterness and quality loss.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 92.5 simplifies rating for celery, reducing density disputes and carrier reclass fees.
- Prepaid terms align with produce programs, minimizing billing exceptions and speeding tender-to-pickup cycles.
- Standardized boxes/crates improve handling efficiency and reduce claims from crushing or temperature abuse.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options, supporting faster scheduling and competitive LTL rates.
