How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State “Fresh Fruit, NOI, Prepaid — NMFC 77900” on the BOL and include the target temperature (e.g., 34–38°F for berries, higher for citrus) and any protect-from-heat or freeze notes.
- Use vented cartons or RPCs on 40x48 pallets; interlock layers, add a top cap, and strap or wrap tightly. Avoid overhang and leave airflow channels for reefer loads.
- Separate ethylene producers (bananas, apples) from sensitive fruit, and pre-cool product before pickup to the transit setpoint to minimize respiration and shrink.
- For short-haul or cross-dock moves, consider insulated liners and gel packs; for longer lanes, book refrigerated LTL and request continuous run, not cycle mode.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Simplifies rating for mixed or uncommon fresh fruits not otherwise indexed, reducing guesswork and reclass risk.
- Prepaid terms give shippers rate and routing control, preventing collect refusals and speeding unload at produce receivers.
- Clear labeling and proper packaging cut OS&D, spoilage, and chargebacks—stabilizing landed costs during peak harvest.
- Consistent NMFC usage streamlines audits and claims handling, improving carrier relationships and securing reliable capacity on produce lanes.
