How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose sturdy vented boxes or wood/plastic crates with slatted or solid covers; if using bags, place them inside boxes or crates for LTL handling.
- Keep bulbs dry and ventilated—use breathable wrap or corner boards, avoid airtight stretch wrapping, and line crates with paper to manage humidity.
- Palletize on 40x48 GMA pallets, interlock stack with no overhang, cap with a slip sheet, and hold height around 40–60 inches to prevent crush damage.
- Separate from odor-sensitive freight (chocolate, textiles, cosmetics); label as “Garlic — Dry” and “Food Grade,” and ship ambient unless a buyer specifies otherwise.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5: simple rating with no density calculations, reducing reclass fees and quote disputes.
- Packaging flexibility—boxes or crates (also allowed covered bags, baskets, drums)—streamlines sourcing and speeds up packing operations.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier acceptance and minimizes special documentation or handling surcharges.
- Ambient shipping avoids reefer costs while consistent classing improves predictability in LTL networks and lowers claim risk.
