How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 78000 and Class 77.5 on the BOL, describe as fresh lingonberries, and select the exact packaging used (boxes, pails, or drums).
- For boxes, use vented food-grade corrugate with poly liners and absorbent pads; palletize on 40×48 with corner boards and breathable stretch wrap to limit bruising.
- Pre-cool product and trailer; maintain 32–41°F (0–5°C) during transit. Choose refrigerated LTL when ambient temps threaten shelf life.
- If using pails or drums, fit gasketed lids and tamper seals, mark This Side Up and Keep Refrigerated, and place leak-absorbent mats under the top layer.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 77.5 rating removes density calculations, cutting reclass risk and speeding accurate quotes.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges for perishable moves.
- Packaging flexibility (boxes, drums, pails) lets you optimize cube and handling to lower freight spend.
- Better temperature control and protective packing reduce damage and shrink, preserving margin and delivery windows.
