How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Rate and tender as NMFC 78180, Class 92.5. No density calculation is needed—select packaging as boxes or crates and list the prepaid terms on the BOL.
- Use ventilated cartons or sturdy slatted crates; keep crowns upright and add dividers to prevent punctures. Secure to 48x40 GMA pallets with corner boards and two straps plus stretch wrap.
- Manage temperature at roughly 48–55°F (9–13°C) with good airflow; pre-cool product and trailer, and mark “Do Not Freeze.” Avoid chilling injury by not dropping below about 45°F.
- On paperwork, note “Prepaid,” commodity as “Pineapples,” and exact piece count (e.g., 60 CTNs). Book receiver appointments and request reefer continuous run for multi-stop LTL produce.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing thanks to a fixed Class 92.5—no density disputes, smoother quotes, and fewer surprise reclass fees.
- Lower claims risk by matching the NMFC with proper boxes/crates and securement, reducing crown damage and juice leaks.
- Faster dock turns: clear prepaid terms and accurate counts streamline carrier handling and minimize detention at pickup and delivery.
- Better consolidation opportunities with produce-focused LTL carriers, improving trailer utilization and reducing cost per case.
