How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density (pcf) from the outer box/crate: L x W x H in inches ÷ 1728 = cu ft, then weight ÷ cu ft = pcf. Example: 72x36x54 in at 680 lb = ~8.4 pcf.
- Package per Item 170: rigid crate or heavy double-wall box, block and brace the sash and blower, cap utilities, and add tip/shock indicators for tall hoods.
- Ship clean, empty equipment only; include a decontamination statement if the hood has seen chemicals. Remove glass accessories or immobilize the sash with foam and bands.
- Mark the BOL with NMFC 78400, packaging type, weight, dims, and the calculated density so the carrier assigns the correct class bracket.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based rating lets compact, well-crated hoods land in lower classes, trimming LTL spend without sacrificing protection.
- Correct Item 170 packaging and clear density notes reduce reclass fees, inspections, and delays at cross-docks.
- Purpose-built crating lowers damage risk on sensitive glass and fans, cutting claims and avoiding lab downtime.
- Planning accessorials (liftgate, inside delivery, appointment) and consolidating hood with base on one skid minimizes extra charges.
