How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density (pcf) from the outer box/crate: L x W x H in inches ÷ 1728 = cu ft, then weight ÷ cu ft = pcf. Example: 72x36x54 in at 680 lb = ~8.4 pcf.
  2. Package per Item 170: rigid crate or heavy double-wall box, block and brace the sash and blower, cap utilities, and add tip/shock indicators for tall hoods.
  3. Ship clean, empty equipment only; include a decontamination statement if the hood has seen chemicals. Remove glass accessories or immobilize the sash with foam and bands.
  4. Mark the BOL with NMFC 78400, packaging type, weight, dims, and the calculated density so the carrier assigns the correct class bracket.
