How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Crate only: use a heavy-duty, four-way forkable wood crate with internal blocking to immobilize benches, bollards, planters, or racks; pad edges and corners to prevent chipping.
- Separate mixed components (e.g., bicycle racks with concrete bases) inside the crate with dividers; bag and secure mounting hardware; mark center of gravity and “Do Not Stack.”
- List NMFC 78820, Class 60, and “Crated” on the BOL; record exact exterior crate dimensions and total weight, including concrete, hardware, and dunnage.
- For jobsite or mall delivery, prebook the right equipment—most crated concrete exceeds liftgate limits; request forklift or crane service and a call-ahead appointment.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single NMFC for many streetscape items—benches, bollards, planters, racks—streamlines quoting, routing, and claims handling.
- Class 60 for dense reinforced concrete often yields more favorable LTL rates than bulkier goods, reducing per-piece shipping cost.
- Crating standard reduces damage risk to brittle edges and finishes, cutting replacements and avoiding costly project delays.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and shortens tender-to-pickup time for time-sensitive municipal or retail installs.
