How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Stabilize the unit: chock wheels, block the tongue, and strap it to a heavy skid so it cannot roll. Example: secure a 6‑ft tow-behind seeder to a 96×48 pallet with four 2" straps.
- Protect precision parts by padding seed meters, opener discs, and linkages; lock any folding sections; remove loose hoppers and bag or crate them with the machine.
- Quote precisely by measuring overall length, width, and height including wheels and hitch, recording weight, and photographing tie-down points; reference NMFC 8080 on the BOL.
- Plan pickup and delivery for farm access: confirm liftgate or forklift needs, narrow-lane access, and that the item will ship secured on a skid—not rolling on or off.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fewer reclasses and billing disputes by clearly citing NMFC 8080 and describing the wheeled seeder configuration on paperwork.
- Lower damage risk when unitized on a skid, preventing wheel roll and shielding meters and openers, reducing claims and in-season downtime.
- Faster dock handling with forklift-ready packaging, improving transit reliability during peak planting windows.
- Better rate options by providing accurate dims and securement details, which can reduce accessorials and open more LTL carrier choices.
