How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Ship unmounted heads only—fork, hoe, rake, manure hook, and potato hook. If handles are attached, confirm a different NMFC item may apply.
- Protect sharp tines and edges with plastic caps or heavy chipboard. Nest heads and wrap with VCI paper to prevent rust during transit.
- Use double-wall cartons with dividers for small quantities; for bulk, crate or bin on a pallet and band firmly with heads oriented inward.
- Document by head type, count, and material (e.g., forged steel). Mark cartons “Tool Heads—Steel, Non-Haz” to aid quick carrier handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduced claims: edge guards and rigid packaging protect tines and blades, cutting damage-related costs and delays.
- Better LTL rates: dense, unitized packs (cartons or crated bundles) minimize cube and improve handling efficiency.
- Simplified compliance: non-hazardous components avoid hazmat surcharges and streamline carrier acceptance.
- Fewer reclasses: clear descriptions for unmounted heads and proper packing align with NMFC expectations, reducing audit risk.
