NMFC Description Class
8190.00 Heads, fork, hoe, manure hook, potato hook or rake:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Ship unmounted heads only—fork, hoe, rake, manure hook, and potato hook. If handles are attached, confirm a different NMFC item may apply.
  2. Protect sharp tines and edges with plastic caps or heavy chipboard. Nest heads and wrap with VCI paper to prevent rust during transit.
  3. Use double-wall cartons with dividers for small quantities; for bulk, crate or bin on a pallet and band firmly with heads oriented inward.
  4. Document by head type, count, and material (e.g., forged steel). Mark cartons “Tool Heads—Steel, Non-Haz” to aid quick carrier handling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Reduced claims: edge guards and rigid packaging protect tines and blades, cutting damage-related costs and delays.
  • Better LTL rates: dense, unitized packs (cartons or crated bundles) minimize cube and improve handling efficiency.
  • Simplified compliance: non-hazardous components avoid hazmat surcharges and streamline carrier acceptance.
  • Fewer reclasses: clear descriptions for unmounted heads and proper packing align with NMFC expectations, reducing audit risk.
