How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the NMFC and class on your BOL: NMFC 85030, Class 55 – Ganister Rock (ground or unground) for accurate rating.
- For boxes, use double- or triple-wall cartons with heavy poly liners to prevent sifting; seal all seams and reinforce bottoms.
- Palletize on 48x40 pallets; cross-stack boxes, add corner boards, stretch-wrap, and strap twice. Target 2,000–2,500 lb per pallet as carrier permits.
- Keep product dry to avoid weakened packaging and added weight; cap drums, seal bags, and avoid co-loading near food items due to dust.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 delivers predictable LTL pricing for dense mineral freight without density breaks.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and streamlines carrier selection and paperwork.
- Acceptance of bags, boxes, or drums supports existing plant packaging, reducing repack labor and material spend.
- Proper NMFC citation minimizes reclass disputes and inspections, protecting margins on refractory and foundry supply shipments.
