Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
85880.00 Gases, NOI, or Gas Mixtures, NOI, other than flammable or toxic, see Note, item 85881; in cargo tanks or steel cylinders, see Note, item 85882; or in containers in boxes, see Note, item 85883 110

Notes

Note 85881: NOTE- 1. Applies on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Hazard Class 2, Division 2.2, Nonflammable Gas, as defined in 49 CFR 173.115 and required to bear a notice to that effect on bills of lading and packaging. 2. Does not apply when U.S. Department of Transportation regulations require shipping containers to bear a 2.1 'FLAMMABLE GAS' or 2.3 'INHALATION HAZARD' label.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the product is a nonflammable, nontoxic gas (Hazard Class 2.2) such as nitrogen, argon, CO2, helium, or compressed air before assigning NMFC 85880.
  2. Pack approved inner containers or small steel cylinders inside rugged boxes with valve caps, cushioning, and upright orientation arrows; strap boxes to a pallet to prevent roll and tip.
  3. List NMFC 85880 at Class 110 on the BOL and include the Proper Shipping Name and UN number (e.g., UN1066 Nitrogen, compressed) plus 24‑hour hazmat emergency contact.
  4. Keep boxed cylinders away from heat, protect valves, and avoid top-stacking; if using an overpack box, apply the OVERPACK marking and repeat labels as required.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 110 simplifies rating and reduces reclass disputes—no density calculation needed.
  • Nonflammable, nontoxic status broadens carrier acceptance versus flammable gases, helping secure better LTL capacity.
  • Boxed container approach enables compliant small-lot deliveries for inerting, purging, and instrument gases used across petroleum operations.
  • Clear hazmat documentation and labeling cut delays, minimize fines, and support faster quote-to-pickup cycles.
