Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
85900.00 Gases or Gas Mixtures, poisonous by inhalation, see Note, item 85901, in metal cylinders, in metal drums, or in containers in boxes or crates:

Notes

Note 85901: NOTE-Applies on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Hazard Class 2, Division 2.3, Poison Gas, as defined in 49 CFR 173.115 and required to bear a notice to that effect on bills of lading and packaging.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the PIH designation, UN/NA number, and hazard zone, then reference NMFC item 85901 to determine the exact class for your specific gas blend.
  2. Package in compliant metal cylinders or drums with valve protection; if using smaller containers, overpack in sturdy boxes or crates and secure to a pallet with blocking and bracing.
  3. Provide complete hazmat paperwork: proper shipping name (Class 2.3), any subsidiary risks (2.1 flammable or 8 corrosive), emergency contact, and current cylinder test/inspection dates and SDS.
  4. Choose carriers authorized for PIH 2.3, notify terminals of restricted access or ventilation needs around petroleum sites, and schedule pickups to minimize dwell and exposure.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate NMFC alignment with 85901 prevents reclassification, hazmat rejections, and costly penalties for PIH shipments.
  • Carrier acceptance improves when documentation and packaging match PIH 2.3 requirements, keeping refinery and pipeline projects on schedule.
  • Clean data drives predictable quoting and hazmat surcharge budgeting for gas cylinders or drums, improving lane and mode decisions for LTL.
  • Safer handling and fewer damage or leak claims by using approved containers and overpacks, reducing insurance deductibles and OS&D disputes.
