How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. List NMFC 86660 and Class 85 on the BOL and specify packaging as Boxes or Crates; confirm your product fits the note referenced by item 86662.
  2. For boxes, use double-wall or tri-wall cartons with rigid foam, corner/edge guards, and panel separators; for crates, build an A-frame or braced upright crate with rubber pads and cross-cleats.
  3. Palletize with a 4-way skid, steel or heavy poly banding, and stretch wrap; label Glass, This Side Up, and Do Not Double Stack; add tall corner posts to deter top loading.
  4. Load panels upright (not flat) and secure to trailer walls with load bars or straps; provide accurate piece count and exterior crate/box dimensions for quoting and appointment scheduling.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable rating at Class 85 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass risk since the class is not density-based for this item.
  • Crating lowers damage and claim exposure on high-value faceted glass, while boxed packing can cut cost for smaller, lighter panels.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, speeding up tenders and pickups.
  • A single NMFC code streamlines TMS setup, BOL accuracy, and post-audit compliance, improving rate integrity and budgeting.
