Notes
Note 86701: NOTE-The term 'flat glass' applies to glass known as sheet, plate, polished prism, rolled, window or float glass, whether or not polished, laminated, colored, opalescent, opaque, chipped, decorated, wired, etched, figured, acid dipped, ground, sandblasted, metalized (sprayed with atomized metal while glass is hot), silvered for mirrors or tempered, but not when flashed, nor framed or leaded (set in or framed by lead or other metal).
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State on the BOL: “NMFC 86700 – Glass, flat or bent, NOI; or Glazing Units (not in sash)” and include your exact package spec (e.g., Package 235, 785, 2147).
- Use rigid crates or manufacturer-rated boxes that meet the NMFC package numbers listed; add foam separators between panes, edge guards, corner protectors, and ‘Do Not Stack’ labels.
- Palletize long crates with 4-way entry skids; keep zero overhang and use shock/tilt indicators. Carriers often require 48 in x 40 in minimum footprint for IGUs.
- Group same-size lites in one crate and mark piece count and orientation arrows. Avoid mixed sizes in a single crate to cut breakage and reweigh events.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate use of NMFC 86700 and package specs reduces carrier reclass, inspection delays, and surprise billing.
- One item covers flat, bent, and insulated glazing units, simplifying SKU mapping and speeding quotes and tenders.
- Approved crate/box methods increase carrier acceptance and drive down damage ratios, improving claim outcomes.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines routing and typically avoids special handling surcharges tied to regulated goods.
