How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Select NMFC 86770 when the freight is strictly glass microscope slides or slide covers packed in boxes; if shipping kits or accessories, review Note item 86771 to confirm scope.
  2. Use rigid cartons with dividers or slide mailers inside a master box; cushion all sides and mark Fragile. Example: 10 mailers of 50 slides each per master carton.
  3. Palletize small cartons to prevent crush damage: 48x40 pallet, no overhang, add edge protectors, and stretch wrap with a top sheet for stability.
  4. List Class 70 and packaging as boxes on the BOL; include accurate weight and dimensions for carrier fit and pricing even though the class is not density-based.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 70 simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes, reducing reclass fees and post-audit headaches.
  • Boxed-only spec aligns with carrier handling for fragile lab glass, lowering claim rates and preserving fulfillment timelines.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and special driver requirements, accelerating lab-to-lab replenishment.
  • Consistent classification across slides and covers enables standardized rate tables and predictable budgets for recurring clinical lanes.
