Notes
Note 86752: NOTE-The term 'leaded glass' means glass either colored or clear, set in lead or in other metal.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 86750 and Note 86752 on your BOL, and specify packaging as boxes. Example: “5 boxes leaded glass panes, 250 lb total, palletized, fragile handling.”
- Use double-wall corrugated cartons with rigid foam or honeycomb, edge guards, and face sheets to protect surfaces—critical for radiation-shielding panes and optical blanks.
- Palletize boxes upright with no overhang, band and stretch-wrap, and add tilt/shock indicators. If stacking is risky, apply ‘Do Not Stack’ cones or caps.
- Choose carriers experienced with fragile LTL. Declare non-hazardous, add cargo insurance, photograph packaging before tender, and request inside pickup or liftgate when shipping from clinics or labs.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate use of NMFC 86750 prevents reclass/rebill disputes and stabilizes your freight rates.
- Box-specific packing reduces breakage on dense, delicate leaded glass, cutting claim costs and replacement delays.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving transit speed and budget predictability.
- Proper palletization and handling marks reduce touches in the network, improving on-time delivery for medical imaging and architectural projects.
