How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the capacity exceeds 1/2 gallon to use this named glassware item; smaller units may fall under different NMFC items.
- Select packaging per size: double-wall cartons with foam corners and rigid dividers for smaller tanks, or wood crates with cross-bracing and a floating base for larger panes.
- Palletize with no overhang, use edge guards for banding, mark This Side Up and Glass labels, and add shock/tilt indicators for visibility in LTL hubs.
- Remove lids, pumps, and décor; wrap separately to prevent internal breakage. Ensure the unit is dry, cushion all edges, and photograph each packing step for claims support.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Named glassware classification helps reduce reclass fees and dispute time versus density-based ratings, improving cost predictability.
- Damage mitigation from crate/box specs lowers claims and chargebacks for pet retailers, vivarium builders, and aquaculture suppliers.
- Consolidate multiple tanks upright with dividers in one crate or on a single pallet to optimize LTL space and access better freight rates.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and accelerates quoting and scheduling, including residential or liftgate deliveries.
