How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm unit size is 1/2 gallon or less and reference Note 87552; larger tanks or special constructions may rate under a different NMFC.
- Pack individually with rigid corner guards, bubble or foam wrap, and an inner carton; use double-wall boxes or a snug wooden crate labeled Glass and This Side Up.
- Palletize on the top tier only with no overhang; use a flat, clean deck board, light stretch wrap, and do-not-stack cones to limit vertical pressure.
- Describe on the BOL as “Glass aquariums/terrariums, empty, NMFC 87550, Class 100, boxed/crated”; avoid shipping with water or contents to prevent reclass or refusal.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 100 with no density calculation speeds quoting and reduces reclass risk.
- Lower claims exposure when boxed or crated per item language, cutting damage costs and customer returns for pet retailers and lab suppliers.
- Operational flexibility: choose cost-effective boxes for parcel-friendly lanes or crates for rough LTL routes without changing the class.
- Cleaner audits: accurate NMFC 87550 citation plus packaging type helps avoid inspection fees, reweighs, and bill-back surprises.
