How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- When quoting LTL, select Packaging: Boxes and use Class 70. Describe commodity as “Aquariums or Terrariums, glass, disassembled panels with plastic frames (NMFC 87560).”
- Pack each kit so glass never touches glass: wrap each pane, add foam corner guards, plastic-frame edge protection, and corrugated dividers before sealing sturdy double-wall cartons.
- Palletize cartons upright like books. Add corner boards, two straps in both directions, and full stretch-wrap. Label “Fragile Glass,” “Do Not Clamp,” and use cones if top-loading is risky.
- Record carton count, outer dimensions, and total weight on the BOL. Density isn’t required for the class here, but accurate dims prevent reweighs and rebills.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 70 removes density swings and reduces reclass disputes for glass panel kits.
- Lower damage risk: disassembled, boxed panels with plastic frames travel safer than assembled tanks, cutting claims and replacement costs.
- Faster carrier acceptance: non-hazardous GLASSWARE GROUP item with a clear NMFC streamlines quoting, tendering, and scheduling.
- Simplified SKU consolidation: multiple aquarium/terrarium kits can ride under one commodity, minimizing accessorials and easing warehouse workflows.
