How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use molded pulp or foam partitions for beakers and test tubes; sleeve pipettes individually. Cushion distillation bulbs, evaporators, and glass “worms” with custom inserts and separate any stoppers.
- Pack only in strong corrugated freight boxes—preferably double‑wall. Fill voids firmly, tape seams with filament-reinforced tape, and mark Fragile and This Side Up without relying on labels alone.
- Unitize for LTL: place inner cartons in a master case or secure on a pallet with corner boards and stretch wrap. Add a rigid top cap or honeycomb sheet to spread stacking pressure and avoid overhang.
- On the BOL, state “NMFC 88120, Class 100, Lab Glassware in Boxes” and include piece counts. Photograph packed cartons before tender to support any damage claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 100—no density math and fewer reclass surprises.
- One item number covers beakers, pipettes, test tubes, bulbs, evaporators, and worms in boxes, reducing SKU-by-SKU classification work.
- Packaging aligned to the “in boxes” requirement lowers inspection risk and accessorial fees, improving transit reliability.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, accelerating lab supply deliveries.
