How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the item on your BOL as “NMFC 88420, Class 60 – TV face/implosion plates” to prevent reclass disputes and speed up carrier acceptance.
- Use sturdy boxes or wood crates only, as recognized by this item. Cushion edges with foam end-caps, add corner protection, and keep plates vertical to reduce flexing.
- Palletize boxed or crated units with edge boards and stretch wrap; avoid banding directly over glass. Mark Fragile and This Side Up and add shock/tilt indicators for high-value loads.
- For repair/refurb shops, separate each plate with non-abrasive interleaves and identify lot numbers on the inner wrap so items remain traceable if a crate is opened in transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 rating simplifies quoting and contracts, minimizing density questions and unexpected reclassification fees.
- Non-hazardous glass status streamlines paperwork and avoids hazmat surcharges while still enabling careful handling instructions.
- Crate-or-box flexibility lets you tailor protection to risk and value, helping balance packaging cost against potential damage claims.
- Clear NMFC alignment for glassware improves carrier confidence, often yielding steadier LTL rates and faster tender-to-pickup cycles.
