Notes

Note 88442: NOTE-Applies only on vaporproof glass protectors, each of which, when used, closely and completely encloses a single incandescent electric lamp (bulb).

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the item qualifies as glass protectors for incandescent lamp bulbs (not the bulbs themselves) per the note under item 88442 before tendering freight.
  2. Pack units in partitioned inner cartons or molded trays, then master-pack in sturdy boxes; e.g., 12-count cells inside a corrugated master with tight void fill.
  3. Palletize boxed cases in a column stack on sound 40x48 pallets with no overhang; add corner boards, stretch wrap, and a top cap with “Do Not Top Load” labels.
  4. On the BOL, write “NMFC 88440, Class 70, Glass Bulb Protectors, boxed,” include piece count and packaging type; density entry is not required.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable rating: fixed Class 70 removes density math, speeding rate shopping and TMS automation.
  • Lower claim exposure: boxed-only requirement and cell partitions reduce breakage and OS&D costs.
  • Fewer reclasses: a defined NMFC item helps avoid inspections, reweighs, and carrier adjustment fees.
  • Simpler operations: non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges.
