Notes
Note 88442: NOTE-Applies only on vaporproof glass protectors, each of which, when used, closely and completely encloses a single incandescent electric lamp (bulb).
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item qualifies as glass protectors for incandescent lamp bulbs (not the bulbs themselves) per the note under item 88442 before tendering freight.
- Pack units in partitioned inner cartons or molded trays, then master-pack in sturdy boxes; e.g., 12-count cells inside a corrugated master with tight void fill.
- Palletize boxed cases in a column stack on sound 40x48 pallets with no overhang; add corner boards, stretch wrap, and a top cap with “Do Not Top Load” labels.
- On the BOL, write “NMFC 88440, Class 70, Glass Bulb Protectors, boxed,” include piece count and packaging type; density entry is not required.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 70 removes density math, speeding rate shopping and TMS automation.
- Lower claim exposure: boxed-only requirement and cell partitions reduce breakage and OS&D costs.
- Fewer reclasses: a defined NMFC item helps avoid inspections, reweighs, and carrier adjustment fees.
- Simpler operations: non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges.
