NMFC Description Class

Notes

Note 90502: NOTE-Provisions on cast stone apply only on products of hydraulic, masonry, mortar, natural or Portland cement with or without sand or aggregate, or on stone dust, chips or granules combined with not to exceed 25 percent of plastic binder.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm your material fits 90500 (stone blocks, pieces, or slabs). If finish, thickness, or fabrication is specialized, review related notes under items 90502–90504 before booking.
  2. Package slabs upright on A‑frames or in robust wood crates with edge protection and foam. Band securely to skids with 4x4 runners for forklift pockets and add “Do Not Stack” where appropriate.
  3. Plan handling for mass and fragility: use padded forks or a spreader bar, center the load over axles, and block/bracing to stop lateral slide. Keep slabs vertical to prevent flex and chipping.
  4. Document specifics on the BOL: stone type (granite, marble, etc.), count of pieces, largest dimensions and weight, and packaging method (crated, A‑frame, banded). Note non-hazardous material.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Correct use of NMFC 90500 reduces reclass and re-rate risks, protecting margins and avoiding surprise invoices.
  • Purpose-built slab packaging and clear labeling cut edge and corner damage, lowering claim frequency and cycle time.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps secure competitive LTL or flatbed rates for heavy construction freight.
  • Accurate specs (dimensions, counts, packaging) speed quotes and pickups, minimizing dwell, labor overtime, and missed delivery windows on job sites.
