How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the exact gypsum form before rating—e.g., drywall sheets, bagged powder, or cast moldings—since each may use a different specific NMFC item within the gypsum group.
- Protect edges and faces from crush and moisture. Example: 4x8 gypsum board stacked on a skid with corner protectors, top/bottom cover sheets, stretch wrap, and a poly moisture barrier.
- Select packaging that matches the product: bagged powder on heat‑sealed multiwall bags and shrink‑wrapped pallets; ornate cast pieces in foam-lined crates with “Fragile/Keep Dry” and “Do Not Top Load” labels.
- Document handling limits on the BOL (keep dry, no top load, do not clamp). Include piece count, pallet dimensions, and photos to prevent reclass or OS&D disputes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower damage and claims by preventing edge crush and moisture exposure—critical for fragile gypsum board and decorative castings.
- Accurate item selection within the gypsum group avoids reclass fees and preserves quoted LTL rates.
- Clear packaging and labeling reduce dock handling time and carrier exceptions, speeding pickups and deliveries.
- Consistent moisture protection prevents jobsite rejections and costly reships, stabilizing project schedules and budgets.
