How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the product form (powdered gypsum, gypsum rock, plaster/Stucco, Keene’s cement, accelerators/retarders, or blocks/tiles) and its final shipping package, then weigh and measure the full pallet or crate to calculate density (lb/cu ft) for NMFC Item 170.
- Run a quick density check: a 48×40×36 in pallet of bagged plaster weighing 2,000 lb cubes at 40 cu ft, or 50 pcf—often qualifying for a lower class and better LTL rate.
- For blocks/planks/slabs/tile, band to a pallet with corner and edge protectors, add a rigid top cap (OSB), and keep strapping off metal-reinforced edges; mark as Do Not Stack if crush-risk exists.
- Control moisture and dust: use sift‑proof bag closures, poly liners in boxes or drums, full stretch-wrap with a top sheet, and keep shipments off damp floors or exposure during transfer.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate density entry under NMFC 91925 prevents reclass/rebill disputes, keeping invoices clean and pickups on schedule.
- Optimized packing—tighter bag patterns, right-size boxes, or drums that reduce void space—boosts density, lowering freight class and cutting LTL rates.
- Non-hazmat mineral products streamline carrier acceptance, avoid hazmat fees, and simplify paperwork for faster tendering.
- Edge protection and moisture barriers reduce breakage and clumping, slashing claims and waste for contractors and plants receiving gypsum goods.
