How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package boards in sturdy boxes or fully braced crates; add edge protectors and rigid sheets to prevent flexing around the embedded heating element.
- Palletize flat on a skid longer than the board length, strap in two directions, and wrap to keep out moisture; mark Keep Dry and Do Not Stack if boxes are not crush-rated.
- Clearly label BOL and cartons: “Thermal Gypsum Board – Enclosed Electrical Element, NMFC 91880, Class 70.” This speeds carrier handling and reduces reclass risk.
- For jobsite deliveries (e.g., radiant ceiling panels), request appointment and liftgate as needed; example: ship four boxed panels on a 48x96 plywood skid with corner guards and cross-bracing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 removes density calculations for a fast, consistent quote and fewer reclassification charges.
- Non-hazardous status expands carrier options and avoids hazmat fees and paperwork, cutting total landed cost.
- Right-sized crating minimizes breakage to the gypsum core and the enclosed element, lowering claim rates and project delays.
- Clear NMFC 91880 identification improves rating accuracy across LTL networks, enabling predictable freight budgeting for multi-site rollouts.
