How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 91890 and Class 60 on the BOL and shipment labels to prevent density checks or reclass fees.
- Pack boards flat in boxes or crates; if bundling, use fiberboard edge protectors at least 0.100 inch thick and apply straps snugly without crushing edges.
- Palletize with full-length skids or solid-deck pallets to support the sheet length; avoid overhang and add corner/edge guards and moisture barriers.
- For long pieces (10–12 ft), pre-advise the carrier and choose terminals equipped for over-length handling to minimize accessorials and damage risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing at fixed Class 60, eliminating density calculations and speeding up quotes.
- Lower claim rates by following edge protection and rigid packing guidance, reducing total landed cost.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and simplifies tendering for faster turns.
- Efficient bundling and full-length pallets improve cube use and handling speed, cutting extra fees.
