How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and tender using NMFC 91900 at Class 70; describe the commodity as Structural Gypsum Panels and note Nonhazardous to avoid hazmat accessorials.
- Select compliant packaging: heavy-duty boxes or wooden crates for smaller cuts; for full sheets, build metal‑strapped bundles with fiberboard edge guards not less than 0.100 inch thick on all sides.
- Palletize flat on a solid deck or 3–4 runners to prevent sagging; band bundles to the pallet, avoid overhang, add a rigid top sheet and corner protectors, and use clear handling labels to protect edges.
- Keep moisture out: poly-wrap and tape seams, use waterproof slipsheets, and avoid clamp-truck handling that can crush edges; request dry-van service and confirm no exposure to rain at cross-docks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL rating at Class 70 helps control freight spend and minimizes costly reclass fees or disputes.
- Meeting the fiberboard edge-protection spec materially lowers damage risk, reducing OS&D claims and preserving project schedules.
- Metal‑strapped bundles cut packaging time and lumber use versus full crating, improving throughput without sacrificing carrier acceptance.
- Nonhazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, enabling faster routing to distributors and jobsites.
