How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the exact material on the BOL: animal hair (cattle, goat, hog, horse), human hair, rabbit hair not hatters’ fur, or finished hog bristles (not crude).
  2. Use containment that stops shedding and moisture: poly‑lined bags inside boxes for human hair, tight bales with banding for animal hair, or sealed drums for loose fibers.
  3. Calculate density per Item 170 before tendering. Weigh each shipping unit and measure its external cube to set the correct class within the 50–400 range.
  4. Palletize cleanly and label clearly: “Hair/Bristles – NMFC 92130 – PCF on BOL.” Keep mixed hair and vegetable fiber packages separate from pure hair to avoid reclass.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Lower your freight class by compacting bales or right‑sizing boxes, improving PCF and cutting LTL rates on density‑based pricing.
  • Reduce reclass fees and inspections by documenting the fiber type, packaging (bags, bales, boxes, drums), and calculated PCF on the paperwork.
  • Non‑hazardous commodity broadens carrier options and lanes, speeding quotes and simplifying capacity planning for seasonal hair collections.
  • Tighter containment minimizes claims from leakage, contamination, or loss of loose fibers, protecting margins on bulk hair and bristle shipments.
