How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm if your freight qualifies as Hardware, NOI under NMFC 92900; if a single item type dominates (like locks or tools), a more specific item number may apply.
- Package dense, sharp metal pieces in strong cartons or pails; use poly liners, dividers, and taped lids to prevent abrasion, sift-out, and loss of small parts.
- Palletize tightly with high-burst boxes, corner boards, and 3+ wraps of stretch film; add a top sheet and label each carton with count to deter reweigh/reclass.
- Describe clearly on the BOL: “Hardware Group, mixed fasteners/hinges/brackets, non-haz,” with accurate weight and dimensions for space planning and rating.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single group code streamlines quoting for mixed hardware SKUs and helps avoid costly reclassification disputes.
- Durable, unitized packaging reduces spill, shortage, and damage claims on small parts, protecting margins and customer SLAs.
- Non-hazardous designation speeds tendering and eliminates hazmat surcharges and paperwork cycles.
- Clear commodity descriptions and tight palletization improve pickup efficiency and support sharper LTL rates during capacity constraints.
