NMFC 98510 - Heat Transfer or Brazing Salts | Class 55

Note 98512: NOTE-Applies only on salts or salt compounds for absorption or transfer of heat in the processing of metals or metal articles.

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

1. List NMFC 98510 on the BOL with the description “Heat Transfer or Brazing Salts, in drums” and note the reference to item 98512 for any special provisions.
2. Palletize drums upright with bungs up; use a 48x40 pallet, drum rings or edge boards, and stretch-wrap plus two steel or poly straps. Add a top cap to keep moisture out.
3. Avoid stacking plastic drums; stack steel drums only if manufacturer-rated. Use corner posts and blocking to prevent rolling or shifting in transit.
4. Request the right accessorials (liftgate, appointment) and mark “Non-Hazardous” to streamline carrier acceptance and prevent hazmat-related delays.
