How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 98510 on the BOL with the description “Heat Transfer or Brazing Salts, in drums” and note the reference to item 98512 for any special provisions.
- Palletize drums upright with bungs up; use a 48x40 pallet, drum rings or edge boards, and stretch-wrap plus two steel or poly straps. Add a top cap to keep moisture out.
- Avoid stacking plastic drums; stack steel drums only if manufacturer-rated. Use corner posts and blocking to prevent rolling or shifting in transit.
- Request the right accessorials (liftgate, appointment) and mark “Non-Hazardous” to streamline carrier acceptance and prevent hazmat-related delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with a fixed Class 55—no density calculations or reclass surprises.
- Faster quotes and bookings because the item is clearly defined (drums) and non-hazardous.
- Lower claims risk: drum packaging and proper bracing reduce leaks, contamination, and handling damage.
- Broader carrier options and better lane coverage thanks to non-hazardous status and a clear NMFC reference.
