How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Nest untrimmed steel shells rim-to-rim inside sturdy double-wall cartons; separate layers with chipboard or VCI paper to prevent scuffing and surface rust.
- Palletize cartons on 48x40 pallets, keep overall height under 48 inches to limit box crush, then band and stretch-wrap with corner protectors for steel weight.
- Label each carton with NMFC 98610, Class 85, piece count, and orientation arrows; include 'Untrimmed Steel Helmet Bodies' to avoid confusion with finished helmets.
- For plant-to-coater transfers, avoid mixed pallets with hardware or liners; fill voids so nested stacks cannot shift and request limited handling service.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 removes density disputes, speeding up quoting and reducing reclass fees.
- Nested, boxed presentation cuts cube and lowers LTL cost per unit while protecting bare steel.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges and paperwork.
- Clear NMFC mapping (98610) strengthens claims defense and reduces damages through standardized packing.
