How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use sturdy corrugated boxes with dividers or sleeves; pad rims and chinstrap hardware so steel parts can’t rub. Bag detached liners or bands to prevent abrasion.
- Mark the BOL with “NMFC 98700, Class 100 – steel helmets” and list cartons and units per carton. This supports clean inspections and avoids reclass fees.
- Palletize in even layers with a top cap, stretch wrap, and corner boards. Band securely without deforming shells; keep carton weights manageable for LTL handling.
- For longer routes or storage, add moisture barriers and desiccant to limit surface corrosion. Inspect surplus or used helmets for loose hardware before sealing boxes.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 eliminates density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing surprise reclass charges.
- Boxed packaging aligns with the listing, cutting damage claims on rigid metal goods and keeping claims ratios low.
- Flexibility to ship with liners or bands attached or detached supports diverse kitting, resale, and training needs.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and streamlines tendering, leading to faster pickups and steadier rates.
