How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the product fits: cayenne or chili pepper (including powder), cinnamon, ginger (not candied), nutmeg, oregano, paprika, pepper, licorice root, yucca, and dried flowers/leaves or lavender that are not decorative.
- Calculate density to select the class: measure carton L×W×H in inches, divide by 1728 for cubic feet, then weight ÷ cubic feet = PCF. Example: 16×16×16 in at 40 lb → 2.37 cu ft → ~16.9 PCF.
- Package with food-safe liners inside sturdy boxes or NMFC-approved packages to control odor and moisture. Use double-wall cartons for dense powders and mark ground vs whole on the label.
- Palletize tight to avoid shifting and scent transfer. Keep carton weights manageable (40–50 lb), stretch-wrap, and note NMFC 98730 on the BOL for clean, non-hazardous LTL tendering.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based rating lets you lower class as PCF rises, so right-sizing cartons and minimizing void space can directly reduce LTL spend.
- Non-hazardous designation broadens carrier options and streamlines paperwork, cutting accessorial risks and transit delays.
- Precise NMFC 98730 usage helps prevent reclass or inspection fees, protecting margins on high-value spices like nutmeg, paprika, and ginger.
- Odor and moisture control packaging reduces damage and contamination claims, preserving product quality and customer confidence.
