How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify cure state (raw/green, salted, or dried) and species to select the correct NMFC sub-item within the Hides Group; the group itself shows Class N/A.
- Contain moisture and odor: use plastic-lined bins or sealed gaylords with absorbent pads, then band to pallets and stretch-wrap to prevent brine leakage.
- Mark the BOL and labels with “Inedible Hides/Pelts/Skins,” list count and moisture state, and note packaging (bundles, crates, or lined bins) for carrier acceptance.
- Plan pickups away from food cargo, request covered equipment when possible, and target short transit windows to limit odor complaints and OS&D issues.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct sub-item selection reduces reclass fees and surprise rate increases while improving carrier acceptance for animal by-product freight.
- Leak-proof, palletized packing cuts cleanup charges and trailer washout delays, protecting margins and schedule reliability.
- Dense materials shipped as tight bales or bin loads maximize cube efficiency, helping lower LTL costs on a per-shipment basis.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies paperwork, keeping quotes fast and service flexible.
