How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use rugged, poly‑lined boxes with absorbent layers to contain moisture and odor, and reinforce seams so bone edges or claws don’t puncture the package.
- Standardize box weights for safe handling (for example, 40–60 lb per box) and clearly mark counts and net weight on each carton for fast check‑in.
- Describe the material precisely on the BOL: species or mix, raw/untanned status, and how each box is packed (bagged, lined, layered).
- Confirm the proper subclass within the 65–100 range with your carrier when condition varies (e.g., fresh, dried, or salted) to prevent reclass fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC use reduces costly reclassifications and cleanup charges from leakage or contamination.
- Clear, boxed packaging minimizes damage and odor complaints, lowering claim risk and improving carrier acceptance.
- Predictable LTL rating within Class 65–100 helps budgeting and keeps quotes consistent across lanes.
- Detailed documentation speeds appointments and inspections, improving turn times for tanneries, taxidermy shops, and fabricators.
