How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Shield blades and cutting bars with guards or heavy tape, and immobilize sliding arms using zip ties or factory lock-outs; label cartons “Sharp Components Inside.”
- Match packaging to the unit: bench-top dispensers ride in double-wall boxes with foam blocking, while floor stands or multi-roll cutters should be crated and bolted to a skid.
- Mark upright arrows and center of gravity for tall stands to prevent tip-overs; add banding and corner protectors to survive LTL cross-dock handling.
- Print NMFC 99720 and Class 100 on the BOL; rating is not density-based, but still include weight and dimensions for capacity planning and smooth carrier acceptance.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 100 pricing trims reclass risk and unexpected fees, stabilizing budgets for print shops, fulfillment centers, and packaging suppliers.
- Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat surcharges and extra paperwork, accelerating tenders and cutting dwell time at the dock.
- Clear packaging choices (boxes or crates) reduce damage claims on blade-equipped equipment, improving service reliability and customer satisfaction.
- Accurate NMFC 99720 labeling improves inspection outcomes and on-time performance, especially during peak LTL volumes and multi-stop routes.
