How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 99740, Class 100 on the BOL and describe the commodity as “test tube holders—metal or wooden” to mirror tariff language.
- Pack single orders in sturdy boxes with dividers or foam so prongs and slots don’t bend; for bulk shipments, upgrade to a wood crate to prevent crushing.
- Inside crates, block and brace with corrugated pads; keep heavier metal holders low, and secure layers with strapping or stretch wrap to prevent movement.
- When shipping alongside fragile glassware, separate SKUs and labels to avoid co-mingled claims, and review Note, item 99741 for any exceptions or clarifications.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 eliminates density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing reclass risk and fees.
- One clear classification for both metal and wooden designs simplifies SKU planning, training, and documentation.
- Defined packaging (boxes or crates) lowers damage rates on protruding parts, cutting claim costs and customer returns.
- Non-hazardous status eases carrier acceptance and routing, improving LTL options and transit reliability.
